Of Scottish and Irish parentage, I follow the Victoria Police Pipe Band of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia; and the Rats of Tobruk Memorial Pipes and Drums. I have been photographing the Bands at various gigs for four years, and never tire of the long days and nights listening to the Pipes and Drums as I watch their precision marching and musical Band Competitions. On Anzac Day Eve since 2006 I have arrived at the Eternal Flame at midnight and stood in the dark by its flickering light as people loom out of the shadows and stand by its roaring heat as they wait for the Dawn Service. I wait for the Lone Piper on the wall, in chilling rain or under balmy starlit skies, to hear the Lament and remember my family members from the Boer War, WW1 and WWII. My Father, Gordon Doake, made millions of bullets at Footscray Munitions Factory in the 1940s - he tried three times to enlist, but each time he was told, "Sorry, Mate, you're Essential Services. You have to stay!" He joined the Citizens' Militia Forces and reached Lieutenant, whilst making the bullets and raising a family. I am a Baby Boomer and saw my former schoolmates and a boyfriend conscripted into the Australian Forces in Vietnam. The Lone Piper plays for all of these ... and more ... I will load retrospective groups of photographs taken over the last four years, but in a better format as I progress with the site.
